Subject: N1169 - Informal National Letter Ballot on WG5 N1166

ISO/IEC JTC1/SC22/WG5 N1169

Informal National Letter Ballot on WG5 N1166

WG5 document N1166 is the proposed Draft International Standard for Fortran
(DIS 1539-1).

Earlier this year the Committee Draft was circulated for an SC22 ballot, in
which all countries who submitted votes, other than the US, voted YES,
although France, Germany, Japan and the UK supplied comments with their YES
votes. The reasons for the US NO vote, together with a substantial number
of less critical US comments and the comments which accompanied YES votes,
are accumulated in N1135.

During its meeting in San Diego WG5 agreed its response to all these
comments, and the document incorporating the resulting edits is WG5 N1166.
This is the document that, subject to correction of any errors
inadvertently inserted during the editing process, it is proposed to submit
for a JTC1 DIS Approval ballot in March 1996.

Since WG5 resolved all the reasons for the US NO vote, it is reasonable to
assume that there will be no NO votes on approving the document. However,
ideally all countries will be able to vote YES, without any comments, and
this informal ballot is an attempt to ascertain if there is anything still
in the document which might give rise to comments at this stage.

Would NATIONAL BODIES, therefore, please review the document and respond by
29th February 1996 to the following question:

Do you expect to recommend your country to vote YES without comments in
the JTC1 letter ballot on approval of DIS 1539-1 if the document
submitted for ballot is the same as that distributed as WG5 N1166?

             ------
        YES | |
             ------
NO | | If NO, please supply details of what comments are
             ------ anticipated.

        (signed) ........................ Country: ........................

Please send your reply to the Convenor by 29th February 1996, preferably by
email to <Miles.Ellis@etrc.ox.ac.uk>, or by fax to +44 1865 270527, or by
post.
