Subject: New documents and paper distribution

Documents N1135 to N1172 have just been sent out in paper form to the
nominated representatives of China, France, Japan and Russia. In addition
a small subset has been sent to all members. This consists of the
following documents:

N1163 Resolutions from the San Diego Meeting
N1164 Minutes of the San Diego Meeting
N1168 Informal Letter Ballot on WG5 N1166
N1168 Informal National Letter Ballot on WG5 N1166
N1170 WG5 Membership List (Standing Document 2)

The first two are being sent out in paper form to everyone because our
distribution procedures require me to distribute minutes, meeting
announcements and preliminary meeting agenda in paper form to everyone.

The last is being sent out for you to check. I passed round a copy in San
Diego, and the version distributed incorporates all corrections notified to
me there. However, if there are any changes in the details for those who
were not at the San Diego meeting I would appreciate being notified.

Document N1168 is an informal ballot on the draft DIS, in order to confirm
that the Editor has correctly incorporated all of the edits that were
approved by WG5 (and X3J3 under delegated authority) in San Diego. I shall
also send this out by email after this message. Replies may be sent by
post or fax, but preferably by email. The closing date is 31st January
1996 in order that any errors found may be communicated to the editor,
Richard Maine, before the next X3J3 meeting.

Document N1169 is an informal NATIONAL ballot. The purpose of this is to
assess, as far as possible, whether there are likely to be any comments
accompanying YES votes in the JTC1 DIS ballot that will start, probably, in
April. I am assuming that all countries will vote YES, since every country
apaprt from the US voted YES in the CD ballot, and all the reasons for the
US NO vote were resolved in San Diego. As you know, had the proposed new
DIS balloting procedures not been blocked by ISO, it would not have been
possible to do anything after the DIS ballot other than correct typos.
Although there is now more flexibility, it would be highly desirable to be
in a situation where the only comments, if any, were restricted to typos
(if any!). The closing date for this ballot - for NATIONAL BODIES ONLY -
is 29th February, in order to allow time for national Fortran committees to
agree on their recommended votes. (We will have to do this if the new
rules are ever adopted, so we might as well get into practice now!)

Finally, now that these papers have been distributed in paper form, they
have been moved to a new sub-directory on the WG5 ftp server - N1135-N1172.
This contains all the papers that were in LATEST-DOCS, plus N1160, N1164,
N1168, N1169, N1170, N1171 and N1172. They are all available in
PostScript, Acrobat and Text forms, apaprt from N1170 (the membership list)
which is only available in PostScript and Acrobat forms as it is generated
directly by a database program. Ther have also been very minor changes to
N1152 and N1153, to correct a couple of typos and the document number in
one case.

The directory LATEST-DOCS contains one new paper, N1173, which is the draft
TR for data type enhancements that was distributed in san Diego as document
S26 but which, due to an oversight on my part, was not given an N number
after the meeting.

Have a good Christmas everyone!

Miles
