Thank you, Malcolm, for sorting this one out and doing the research.  
Although I had only lightly skimmed through the CCI documents recently, 
I recall feeling very uneasy about this decision, but did not have 
the time to pursue the matter any further.  There is no reason at 
all why the pointer attribute should be prohibited for a variable 
in this one special context.
