At the last meeting of J3 (or thereabouts) it was mentioned that ISO
will accept standards in word (or wordperfect) but not other formats.

For obscure reasons, after years of buying updates and not using them,
I decided to give word 5.1a (or some such) a whirl.

The fruits of the experiment can be put on an ftp server if anyone is
interested.

The standard made it through the conversion better than I would have
expected (but needs a solid proofreading). I wasn't clever in this
first attempt so the table of contents was blown. I recreated just
enough of it to convince myself it was doable. I did not recreate the
index.

The process was fairly simple. Save the frame document in "mif" format
and name the file foo.rtf. The frame filters use the suffix rtf to
convert the mif to rtf format.

MS word 5 for the mac was able to read them w/o trouble. The format
for each section header was defective somehow (a -4pt specification)
but this was easily fixed.

At least one block of text came out all in symbol font. Also easily
corrected. There is probably a bad table or two.

I believe that a good (word experienced) junior techwriter could fix
all the problems rather easily. It would just take a little careful
reading and perseverance. The index work, I fear, will have to be
redone.
