EDINBURGH PORTABLE COMPILERS TO SUPPLY HP AND CONVEX WITH COMPILER
                TECHNOLOGY FOR FORTRAN 90 & FORTRAN 95

EDINBURGH, Scotland, March 3,1995. Edinburgh Portable Compilers Ltd (EPC)
announced today that it will provide its field-proven Fortran 90 Compiler
technology to Hewlett-Packard Company and Convex Computer Corporation. EPC
will be enhancing its Fortran 90 compiler to provide extensions commonly
used by HP and Convex Fortran 77 users as well as Fortran 95 extensions.
HP and Convex will each be combining the EPC front-end with their own
optimising back-end technologies.

Fortran is the acknowledged language of choice for scientific, engineering,
mathematical and technical applications, with a vast body of established
programs and libraries available. Fortran 90 is the latest ISO/ANSI standard
version of the Fortran programming language. It incorporates all of the
Fortran 77 standard so protecting the huge investment already made in
Fortran 77 applications and libraries. New features provide greater
expressive power, enhanced error detection, portability and regularity thus
achieving better exploitation of modern hardware. Fortran 95 is already in
draft form and this co-development between HP, Convex and EPC will position
the HP and Convex systems as platforms for the future.

Phil Ebersole, R&D Manager for HP's Workstation Systems Division said "our
engineering and scientific customers often have a broad variety of
heterogeneous computing platforms. HP selected EPC's Fortran 90 front end
compiler technology so that we can ensure that our customers can obtain a
compatible Fortran 90 implementation across many platforms, ensuring complete
portability of their Fortran 90 applications. By combining EPC's Fortran 90
front end with HP's highly optimised back end technology our customers can
take advantage of the latest Fortran 90 language features without giving up
performance and cross language compatibility they have come to expect from
HP compilers."

"This agreement with EPC underscores Convex's multinational interests,
demonstrated through strategic technology relationships with many leading
research and development groups in Europe over the past decade" said
John L. M. Hughes, Convex Vice President and General Manager of EAME
Operations. "Convex recognises the investment and emphasis placed by the
European Community on various aspects of HPCN, and we are delighted to have
found, in EPC, an excellent partner to accelerate and support our Fortran 90
joint development project with HP."

EPC's acclaimed Fortran 90 is already available on SPARC, MIPS, INTEL and
IBM RS/6000 based UNIX platforms. By making the same Fortran 90 available on
the HP and Convex platforms, users will benefit from the commonality offered
across the widest range of UNIX systems.

EPC is Europe's largest independent Compiler House which specialises in
providing a range of high performance compilers for UNIX based systems.
Geoff Millard, Chairman of EPC, said "We have invested substantially over
the last few years to ensure that our Fortran 90 product is a premium
product. We see this collaboration and co-development with HP and CONVEX as
complementary to our strategic development plan."

Hewlett-Packard Company is a leading global manufacturer of computing,
communications and measurement product and services, recognised for
excellence in quality and support. HP has 98,200 employees and had revenue
of $25 billion in its 1994 fiscal year.

Convex Computer Corporation (NYSE:CNX) is a leading world-wide supplier of
high performance computing technologies. The company markets its products
primarily to scientific, engineering and technical users in a wide variety
of applications in areas such as seismic processing, reservoir simulation,
computational chemistry, computer-aided engineering, image processing,
aerospace simulations, data management and molecular biology. Convex has
sold more than 1,395 systems to over 675 customers in 48 countries. The
systems are sold and serviced through direct sales and an extensive
distribution network.

No details regarding availability were disclosed at this time.
