The following is additional local information on WG5 Tokyo meeting.

(1) Mielparque Tokyo
Those who know about prices in Tokyo may be wondering why the room rates at
Mielparque are so cheap compared to other hotels in Tokyo. It is because
this hotel is related to the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications. It
is a fairly good, new and clean hotel.

Walking from there, it takes 2 minutes to a convenience store (named
'am-pm'), 5 minutes to Shiba Park Hotel, 5 minutes to the nearest subway
stations (Daimon and Onarimon), 10 minutes to the nearest JR station
(Hamamatsu-cho), and 10 minutes to the meeting place.

(2) Food
The average price would be 1000 yen for breakfast and lunch, 1500 yen for
dinner. You can get cheaper box-lunch from the convenience store.

You can use knives and forks at many restaurants, but if you use chopsticks
fairly well, the meal would be much more enjoyable.

Wada-san is arranging a dinner party of Japanese cuisine at Fujitsu's guest
place some day during the week.

(3) Rent-a-car
I don't recommend rent-a-car. In general, public transport is convenient
enough. You must drive on the left side of the road. Traffic jams occur
frequently everywhere, even on a highway.

(4) Japan Rail Pass
Those who are planning a trip to Kyoto, Nara, Hiroshima, or any other part
of Japan may be interested in a one week 'Japan Rail' Pass. With this
pass you can use any 'Japan Railway' lines, which cover the whole country,
within 7 days from the starting date you declared.

You must get a coupon for the pass through Japan Air Line, Japan Travel
Bureau, or other Japanese travel companies, BEFORE you come to Japan.
It costs you the equivalent of 27800 yen in your currency. Note that if
you don't have this pass, for example, a round trip to Hiroshima and Kyoto
(by Shinkansen super express) costs more than 36000 yen, apart from meals,
accommodation, or sightseeing.

(5) Tokyo Free Pass
Those who are planning a one-day tour in Tokyo should have either a JR Pass
(see above) or a Tokyo Free Pass, which is available for use on the day you
purchase it.
With this pass you can use any JR train, subway, tram and bus in Tokyo.
You can get it for 1460 yen at any station. A subset version just for JR
lines costs 720 yen.

(6) One-day trip to Kamakura on April 16th, Sunday
Kamakura was the capital of Japan in the 13th century and there are many
old temples and a big statue of Buddha there. I'm going to guide those
who want to visit there. The total cost per person would be about 2500
yen if you have a JR Pass, or 1700 yen more if you don't have it.

(7) Activities for spouses
My wife Yoko, who accompanied me for the recent five WG5 meetings, will
take your spouses for sightseeing on one or two days of the week.
(We are planning something more.)

If you have any question, feel free to ask Wada-san or me, please.
