The first time I met Rich was at the inaugural international Fortran
meeting in London in November 1978.  At the public forum the following
day, attended by 111 people, he gave a paper on 'An Enhanced
procedural interface mechanism for extending Fortran' see

As Jerry says, DEC were strongly opposed to the direction being taken
for Fortran 90 and even gave out fliers at user group meetings saying:
you don't need to have read the public review draft - just vote
against.  I'm glad Fortran survived at DEC (and at IBM who were also
opposed).
