I remember Rich well. He was on the committee, then called X3J3, when I =
joined in 1977. The committee was just starting work to change Fortran =
77 to (what became) Fortran 90, after it had made minor changes to =
Fortran 66 (the first Fortran standard) to become Fortran 77. The aim =
for Fortran 90 was to make Fortran into an =E2=80=9Cstructured =
language=E2=80=9D - loop structures, etc. This was quite controversial, =
would require more work from compiler writers than Fortran 77, and was =
opposed by many companies that wrote compilers. The committee finally =
grew to well over 50 members, many of whom oppose the effort.

As Steve says, Rich was a nice guy. But DEC had a Fortran compiler and =
was opposed to the direction of Fortran 90. As the DEC representative =
Rich was opposed to much of the work, and I remember well having many =
technical discussions (arguments?) with him. I thought he stayed on the =
committee later than 1981, but I really don=E2=80=99t remember when he =
left the committee. Rich was a student at Carnegie Tech (now Carnegie =
Mellon University) the same time I was, but our paths didn=E2=80=99t =
cross at Tech.
