Recommendations of November 2005 Meeting of WG3

1. FCD 13250-2: Topic Maps -- Data Model

WG3 instructs the Editors to respond to National Body comments in N672. The Editors are further instructed to incorporate the decisions taken at the Atlanta meeting, summarized below, and submit the document for FDIS ballot before December 20 2005.

    Summary of decisions:

  1. Move the subject identifiers defined in Clause 7.5 into a new, normative Annex A with the title "Subject Identifiers for Defined Terms", which is introduced by the following text:

The following subject identifiers are defined, in accordance with the recommendations of the OASIS Published Subjects TC, for the sole purpose of enabling unambiguous reference to the subjects they represent, for example in order to enable the collation of information about those subjects. This International Standard attaches no processing semantics of any kind to these identifiers, over and above those associated with subject identifiers in general.

Note: Implementations are strongly discouraged from attaching their own processing semantics since this will impair interoperability.

The namespace for all these identifiers should be:
    http://psi.topicmaps.org/iso13250/glossary/

  2. Change the namespace of all other (model-specific) PSIs to:
    http://psi.topicmaps.org/iso13250/model/
  3. Perform any minor adjustments to the text as necessary in order to reflect the changes to XTM 1.1 described in the next section.

2. FCD 13250-3: Topic Maps -- XML Syntax

WG3 instructs the Editors to incorporate the decisions taken at the Atlanta meeting, summarized below, and submit the document for FDIS ballot before December 20 2005.

    Summary of decisions:

  1. Remove the terms "deserialization", "serialization", and "XTM document" from Clause 3, and a create subject identifier for the term "XTM" in a new, normative Annex A. Use the same text to introduce this Annex as in Annex A of Part 2. Change the definition of "XTM" to: "the standard, XML-based interchange syntax for topic maps".
  2. Change the namespace of the XTM 1.1 vocabulary to:
    http://www.topicmaps.org/iso13250/xtm/
  3. Change the namespace of all model-specific PSIs (i.e., those already defined in the current draft of Part 3) to:
    http://psi.topicmaps.org/iso13250/model/
  4. Make changes to the XTM 1.1 syntax in order to bring the vocabulary into line with Part 2, including the following:
    1. Change the names of the following generic identifiers:
      • from parameters to scope
      • from member to role
      • from roleSpec to instanceOf
        • reverse the order of subjectIdentity and instanceOf in the content model for topic
        • remove the variantName wrapper element
        • require instanceOf on association, occurrence, association role, and topic name elements
        • restrict role elements to containing a single (required) role player
        • remove nesting of variants
  5. Modify Annex E to contain the following:
    1. An explanation of why the namespace has been changed from XTM 1.0: viz:
      • to harmonize the syntax and data model, and to remove ambiguities, and
      • to purge the version number from the namespace, in order to make it more persistent.
    2. An overview of the difference between XTM 1.0 and XTM 1.1.
    3. An XSLT style sheet for transforming XTM 1.0 documents into XTM 1.1 documents. Untyped names, occurrences, associations, and association roles in XTM 1.0 documents should be tranformed to typed constructs that use the PSIs defined for that purpose in the XTM 1.0 specification.

3. FCD 13250-4: Topic Maps -- Canonicalization

WG3 notes with regret that Eric Freese was unable to assume the role of co-editor and appoints Lars Marius Garshol in his stead. The Editors are instructed to respond to National Body comments in N615, and to incorporate the decisions taken at the Amsterdam meeting into a new draft and submit the document for a new FCD ballot.

4. WD 13250-5: Topic Maps -- Reference Model

WG3 appoints Robert Barta as co-editor. The Editors are instructed to incorporate the decisions taken at recent meetings into a new draft and circulate it to National Bodies before March 1 2006, with a view to conducting an intensive working session at the WG3 meeting in Seoul.

WG3 further instructs the Editors to prepare a response to National Body comments arising from the current CD ballot and to incorporate the decisions taken at the Atlanta meeting into a new draft to be circulated to National Bodies before March 1 2006.

7. NP Compact Syntax for Topic Maps

In addition, WG3 encourages the Topic Maps community to put forward proposals in advance of the Seoul meeting.

9. Metadata for Published Subjects

WG3 recognizes the need to develop conventions for adding metadata to Published Subject Indicators, in order to

WG3 considers SC34 to be a suitable forum for this work, and instructs its convenor to work together with Motomu Naito to draft an NP and distribute it to the WG prior to the Seoul meeting. The decision as to whether the NWI will take the form of a TR or an IS will be taken at that meeting.

10. Appreciation to Michel Biezunski and Empolis

WG3 requests that SC34 acknowledge the proposal by Michel Biezunski to donate, subject to certain conditions, the domain topicmaps.org to SC34 on behalf of WG3. It further requests that SC34 move forward towards an agreement, taking into account the conditions expressed by Michel Biezunski during the meeting and summarized in N0682.

WG3 requests that SC34 express thanks and appreciation to Empolis GmbH for kindly donating the domain topicmaps.com to SC34 on behalf of WG3.
