ISO/OEC JTC 1/SC 34 is the international standardization subcommittee for Document Description and Processing Languages standards and technical reports related to structured markup languages (specifically the Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML) and the Extensible Markup Language (XML)) in the areas of information description, processing and association.
0. CHAIRMAN
At the SC 34 Plenary Meeting held in Kyoto, Japan, 2007-12-08/11, SC 34 endorsed the Secretariat's nomination of Dr. Sam Oh as the new chairman. This nomination will be sent to the JTC 1 plenary meeting to be held in Nara, Japan, 2008-12 for appointment.

1. The SCOPE of this committee is:
Standardization in the field of document structures, languages and related facilities for the description and processing of compound and hypermedia documents, including:
- languages for describing document logical structures and their support facilities
- languages for describing document-like objects in web environments
- document processing architecture and formatting for logical documents
- languages for describing interactive documents
- multilingual font information interchange and related services
- final-form document architecture and page information interchange
- hypermedia document structuring language and application resources
- API's for document processing
2. MEMBERSHIP:
SC 34 has 40 Participating (P) Members, 13 Observers (O) Members, 6 Liaison members Internal to ISO and IEC, and 4 External Liaison members.

3. MEETINGS:
Future Meeting:
DIS 29500 BRM:
- In regard to the September 2, 2007 JTC 1 ballot on the fast track DIS 29500 based on Ecma 376, the ballot resolution meeting (BRM) is scheduled for the week of February 25-29, 2008 at the International Conference Centre Geneva http://www.cicg.ch/en/index.php. Only representatives of those national bodies who responded to the ballot that closed September 2 are eligible to attend, and, therefore, only those national bodies are permitted to change their registered vote on DIS 29500 with their membership status as recorded in ballot summary. No additional votes can be cast in this matter; P-member/O-member membership status in SC34 is irrelevant to the BRM. Within 30 days after the BRM, national bodies will indicate if their original vote stands or if they wish to change their original vote; there is no new vote per se on approving the DIS. In accordance with the JTC 1 Directives, the progress of the specification will depend on the revised status of all previously-received votes after the BRM. Observers, press and national bodies not voting in the September 2, 2007 ballot are prohibited from attending the BRM. - Information for On-site Registration:
- Registration will take place from 8:00am to 12:00pm on the 1st day of the meeting (2008-02-25). (Note: the meeting starts at 9:00 am)
- The registration desk will be located at the main entrance hall on the ground floor. (There will be a sign with the meeting. )
- The participants are kindly requested to bring their identity card (passport, etc...) as badges will be provided only with the presentation of their ID.
- Only badge holders can access the meeting room, Room 5&6 on the 3rd floor.
- Any replacement must be announced by 2008-02-21 by email to takahashi@iso.org, and replacement without advance notice will not be accepted.
- The registration desk will close at 12:00pm on 2008-02-25. Any registration after this time will take place at Room 19 on the 3rd floor.
