Social events:

Department of Informatics at the University of Oslo (www.mn.uio.no/ifi/english/about/) would like to invite the WG14 committee for a reception at the university on Tuesday evening. More details to follow.

Hotels:

The recommended hotel for the event is:

THON HOTEL EUROPA, St Olavs gate 31, 0166 Oslo
Phone: +47 23 25 63 00
Email: europa.booking@thonhotels.no?subject=WG14/18296724
www.thonhotels.com/hotels/countrys/norway/oslo/thon-hotel-europa/

Thon Hotel Europe is cheap, but decent, hotel very conveniently located in the center of Oslo. Clean, nice staff, close to public transport, restaurants and places to visit. If you want to book a room, please contact the hotel by email and mention WG14/18296724 in the subject line. 20 rooms have been reserved for this event, and if you book before March 23 you will get a special rate (starting at NOK 925 for a single room). Breakfast and free wifi included. You are unlikely to find a better deal.

Alternative hotels nearby that you might want to consider are:
www.radissonblu.com/scandinaviahotel-oslo (from NOK 1595 per night)
www.grand.no (from NOK 1745 per night)

Airports:

The recommended airport is Oslo Airport, Gardermoen (OSL). This is the main airport used by most major airlines flying to Norway. There is a very convenient airport train service (flytoget.no). If you are staying at Thon Hotel Europa, you want to take the train to Nationaltheatret station and walk 10 minuts from there. If you have much to carry, take train to Oslo S station and then a taxi to the hotel. Important: Do *not* take taxi from the airport!

Some budget airlines are also flying into Rygge Airport and Torp Airport. From these small airports you will typically take a bus to/from the center of Oslo.

Local transportation:

Public transportation is excellent in Oslo (ruter.no). Frequent and reliable service to all/most places of interest. A prepaid travelcard and relevant timetables will be made available to you.

It is strongly recommended that you do *not* rent a car. The center of Oslo is deliberately designed to make you constantly regret that you chose a car instead of public transportation.

It is easy to get a taxi in Oslo, but they are expensive and beware that there are a few rougue taxi companies operating. Oslo Taxi (02323), Norgestaxi (08000), and Asker&Bærum Taxi (06710) have a good reputation.

Restaurants:

There are many good restaurants in Oslo, in partiular around Karl Johans Gate and also at Aker Brygge. The hotel also serve food.

Here are five restaurants to consider:

and finally, if you want something cheaper, while unusual and interesting, you might want to consider:

Weather in Oslo:

The average temperatures of the month is around 5 degrees celsius, it might still be ice in the streets here in Oslo. While minus degrees and snow is possible, extreme weather conditions are not common in April. Good shoes, a thick sweater and a wind jacket will keep you warm.

Currency:

NOK (100 NOK ~ 15 USD ~ 12 Euro) is is the only currency accepted, but cards can be used nearly everywhere. There are many ATM machines, and you can often also withdraw extra money when paying for something else.
