WG11 Convener report to SC22, July 1996 SC22/WG11 N433

1. Meetings

The following meetings of SC22/WG11 were held since the last report:

September 25-27, 1995	Gaithersburg (MD), U.S.A.
April 15-19, 1996	Copenhagen, Denmark

There is currently no next meeting planned.

2. WG11 Participation

Participation in WG11 continues to be a point of concern. Although the
situation is better than before (active participation from Japan and Sweden
at the last meetings), the fact it is still basically a `one person per
country representation' could make attendance at meetings unpredictable.
Also, the fact that some representatives are only interested in one WG11
project and not in the other projects makes the picture look better than it
actually is.

Therefore SC22 Member Bodies are urgently requested to continue to pay
attention to the support for the WG11 activities.

3. Work Item JTC1.22.16 - Common Procedure Calling Mechanism

This project is finalized: the document is published by ITTF as
ISO/IEC 13886:1996.

4. Work Item JTC1.22.17 - Language Independent Datatypes

This project is finalized: the document is to be published by ITTF as
ISO/IEC 11404:1996.

5. Work Item JTC1.22.28 - Language Independent Arithmetic, Part 1

This project is finalized: the document is published as ISO/IEC 10967-
1:1994.

6. Work Item JTC1.22.33 - Language Independent Arithmetic, Part 2

The first CD was distributed to SC22 as SC22 N2021 for combined
registration and CD ballot. Both ballots passed. However, seeing the
amount of comments received on the document, WG11 has decided to produce a
second CD 10967-2. This document is expected to be available for CD ballot
by the end of August 1996.

7. Work Item JTC1.22.34 - Language Independent Arithmetic, Part 3

The work on this part of IS 10967 (on complex arithmetic and procedures)
will follow (in time) the work on part 2,

8. Language Independent Service Specifications

As with many WG11 projects, participation in this project remains a
problem. Furthermore, there is no official project-editor for the project,
although reasonable progress has been made thanks to the efforts of
Mr. Brian Meek. Pending the resolution of this problem the convener will
act as project editor.

A more or less complete draft of this document is expected by 4Q96.

9. Liaisons

Liaisons exist with the following SC22 WGs: WG2 - Pascal, WG3 - APL, WG4 -
COBOL, WG9 - Ada, WG14 - C, WG15 - POSIX, WG20 - Internationalization and
WG22 - PCTE. Also, liaison representatives from SC24 (Graphics) and SC26
(Micro Processors) to WG11 have been appointed.

Informal liaisons also exists with SC22/WG13 - Modula-2, SC22/WG17 - Prolog
and SC2 - Characters.
